SEO and paid advertising together: why B2B companies need both

Most agencies sell you either SEO or ads, rarely both. That's convenient for the agency, but bad news for you. SEO and paid advertising solve two entirely different problems, and if you choose only one, you pay for half the answer to how your business actually grows.

Do B2B companies need both SEO and paid advertising?

Yes. SEO builds visibility that lasts and costs less per lead over time, while paid advertising brings you customers while the SEO is still building up. Most B2B companies that grow steadily use both at the same time, not one after the other.

That might sound like something an agency offering both would say. That's exactly the point. We see it from the inside every day, and it's rarely the pure-play solutions that win.

Why the two solve different problems

What ads do best

Ads are fast. Set up a campaign today, and you can have leads tomorrow. That makes them perfect when you launch something new, test a message, or need pipeline now and not in six months. The downside is that the traffic stops the moment you stop paying. No history, no residual value.

What SEO (and AI visibility) do best

SEO takes longer to build, often three to six months before you see real movement. In return, the page you rank on stays put. It keeps bringing in people searching for what you offer, without you paying per click. In 2026 this is also about something ads don't touch: how your business shows up when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for recommendations in your industry. That's a completely different game from Google ads, and it's built by the same content that drives classic SEO. See also our guide to AEO vs SEO in 2026.

What happens when you choose only one

Choose ads only, and you build nothing that lasts. If the budget stops flowing in, the traffic disappears the same day. Choose SEO only, and you miss the fast results that keep the pipeline filled while the organic work matures, and you hand the top spots in the search results to competitors willing to pay for them.

The most common mistake we see in Norwegian B2B companies isn't choosing the wrong channel. It's choosing one channel and never adding the other, even as the budget grows.

How to split the budget between SEO and ads

There's no single right answer here, but three factors decide where you should put the weight:

  • How long is your sales cycle? A short decision path (days to weeks) can carry more ad weight. A long decision path (months) needs SEO and content to keep you visible throughout the research phase the customer does before they even talk to a salesperson.

  • How big is the contract value? High value per customer can carry a higher cost per lead, and then you can also afford to spend more on ads while the SEO builds up.

  • How competitive is the keyword? If the organic spots are already owned by big players, ads give you a way in you otherwise don't have while you build your own visibility in the background.

If you're unsure, start 60/40 in favor of whatever gives the fastest result for your situation, and adjust each month based on what actually drives qualified leads, not just clicks.

How to do it in practice

Start with the goal, not the channel. What does the business need right now, pipeline this month or a foundation for next year? Set aside budget for both from day one, even if the split is uneven. Let the ads gather data on which messages and keywords actually convert, and use that same insight to prioritize which content the SEO work should be built around. The two channels get better from sharing data, not just budget. Also read 7 effective ways to get traffic to your new website for more concrete moves.

Frequently asked questions

Should B2B companies choose SEO or paid advertising?

Most should use both. Ads give fast results, SEO builds lasting visibility. Together they cover the whole buying journey, from the first search to the decision.

How long does it take before SEO gives results?

Usually three to six months before you see clear movement, depending on the competition in the industry and how much content already exists on the website.

How much should a B2B company spend on ads versus SEO?

It depends on the sales cycle, contract value and competitive landscape. A common start is 60/40 in favor of whatever gives the fastest result for your specific situation, adjusted along the way.

Do paid ads affect a company's AI visibility (AEO)?

Not directly. AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity don't cite ad placements. But the insight from the ads, such as which keywords and messages convert, gives you a better basis for prioritizing the content that actually builds AI visibility.

Can you start with just one channel and add the other later?

Yes, but don't wait too long. The longer you run ads only, the longer you postpone building something that lasts without ongoing budget.
