Bing launches Citation Share: now you get a real number for your AI visibility

Bing Webmaster Tools rolled out four new features in the AI Performance Report this week: Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare. For the first time, Norwegian businesses can see, as a percentage, how large a share of the AI citations on a given topic they actually own. Here we walk through what the features do, what they don't do, and what you should check this week.

Bing Webmaster Tools got four new features this week that make AI visibility measurable: Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare. The most important is Citation Share, which for the first time gives Norwegian businesses a percentage for how large a share of the AI citations on a topic they actually own.

What is new in Bing Webmaster Tools?

Bing has added four new reports to the AI Performance Report: Intents (why you're cited), Topics (which topic the citation belongs to), Citation Share (your share of the citations) and Compare (development over time). It all rolls out globally in preview from June 16, 2026.

  • Intents groups the queries that triggered your citation into categories like informational, commercial, research and local, so you see what type of AI experience your content shows up in.

  • Topics gathers related queries into thematic clusters. "AI visibility", "AEO agency Norway" and "how to get cited by ChatGPT" land in the same cluster, for example, instead of being counted separately.

  • Citation Share shows what percentage of the citations on a given topic belong to you, out of all citations shown for that same topic.

  • Compare overlays the previous period on the current one, so you can see whether a new article actually moved anything.

Why this is big for Norwegian B2B companies

Until now, AI visibility has mostly been a gut feeling, something like "we were apparently mentioned in ChatGPT the other day". Citation Share turns it into a number you can track over time and prioritize by.

It's a bit like when Google Search Console first gave websites concrete search data instead of assumptions about ranking. Very few Norwegian businesses measure AI visibility at all yet, so those who start tracking Citation Share now get a head start before the field becomes as competitive as classic SEO. If you've already laid the foundation, meaning schema, llms.txt and structured FAQ pages, the number is a direct receipt for whether the work is paying off.

How to get started this week

  1. Log in to Bing Webmaster Tools and verify your domain, if you haven't already.

  2. Open the AI Performance Report and look for the new tabs Intents, Topics and Citation Share. The rollout happens gradually, so some accounts will see them first in a few days.

  3. Start with the Topics tab. See which topic clusters already give you citations, and which are missing entirely.

  4. Use Citation Share to prioritize. A low number on a topic where you should be strong is a concrete content gap, not an assumption.

  5. Publish something new on the weakest topic, and check with Compare four to six weeks later whether it actually made a difference.

What the numbers mean, and what they don't

Citation Share is not a ranking. Bing itself writes that the metric doesn't show competitors' domains, traffic share or a quality score. It only shows your own share of the citations on one specific question.

Take week-to-week swings with a pinch of salt. Bing itself points out that citation patterns are affected by model updates, freshness signals and changes elsewhere on the web. Use the number as a compass for where you should write more, not as a verdict on how well a single post performs.

This complements the AI traffic measurement you may already have

We've previously written about how to measure AI traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity in Google Analytics 4. GA4 shows you what happens after the click, meaning traffic and conversion. Bing Webmaster Tools shows you what happens before the click: whether you're cited at all, and how large a slice of the pie you own on the topic. Together they cover two sides of the same question.

If you haven't put the foundation in place yet, it's worth reading the complete guide to AEO for B2B first. Without schema, llms.txt and structured content, the Bing numbers have little to draw from in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

What is Citation Share in Bing Webmaster Tools?

Citation Share shows what percentage of the citations for a given AI question belong to your website, compared to all other sources cited for the same question.

Does it cost anything to use the new features?

No. Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare are part of Bing Webmaster Tools, which is free. You just need a verified website.

Does this work for Norwegian websites and Norwegian content?

Yes. The features roll out globally and pick up citations across Microsoft Copilot, Bing and partner AI experiences, regardless of language.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools replace Google Search Console or GA4?

No, they complement each other. GA4 shows traffic after someone has clicked through from an AI answer. Bing Webmaster Tools shows whether and how much you're cited in the AI answer itself.

How long does it take before I see data?

The features roll out in preview from June 16, 2026. Bing says itself that precision will improve as more publishers adopt them and more data is collected.

Should I worry if my Citation Share number swings from week to week?

No, not automatically. Bing itself points out that citation patterns are affected by model updates, freshness signals and changes elsewhere on the web. Look at the trend over several weeks, not single measurements.

Summary

This is the first time one of the big AI engines gives you a concrete number to steer by, instead of a feeling that "we probably show up in ChatGPT now and then". Check your Citation Share tab this week, see which topics you're missing entirely, and use it as the basis for your next content priority.
