What does AI-driven marketing cost? Real numbers against agencies and hiring
You have more marketing work than people. There are three ways to buy your way out of it: hire someone else, hand the job to an agency, or build an AI-driven system around the team you already have. We have put the real 2026 numbers for all three side by side, including the calculation most people skip.

Short answer: what does AI-driven marketing cost?
An AI-driven marketing system typically costs a Norwegian SMB NOK 25,000 to 100,000 as a one-off investment for setup and training. The tools cost anywhere from a few hundred to a couple of thousand kroner per user per month. Ongoing support is optional and usually starts around NOK 9,000 per month. For comparison, one new marketing hire costs roughly a million kroner a year, and an agency retainer commonly runs from NOK 15,000 to over NOK 50,000 per month.
(These are typical market levels, not a fixed price list. Our own prices are further down, so you have at least one concrete number to work from.)
This is a calculation about capacity, not about tools
When companies ask what AI-driven marketing costs, they rarely mean the price of a ChatGPT licence. They mean: what does it cost to get the marketing done when we have more work than people?
That leaves three options genuinely competing for your money. Let us take them one at a time, with real numbers.
Option 1: hire a marketer (around a million a year)
A marketing hire in Norway costs roughly NOK 1,024,000 a year. The average salary from Statistics Norway (SSB) for advertising and marketing advisers is NOK 63,420 per month, and with 12 percent holiday pay, 5 percent pension and 14.1 percent employer's national insurance contribution, the total lands above a million. Tools and a desk come on top.
And that is just the money. A new hire usually needs three to six months to become productive on their own, and gives you one person to recruit, train and follow up. The cost is fixed no matter how much marketing actually comes out the other end.
When hiring is still the right call: when your bottleneck is judgement and ownership, not volume. If you need someone who owns the brand full time and makes decisions every day, a tool will not solve that.
Option 2: agency retainer (NOK 15,000 to over 50,000 per month)
An ongoing agency retainer for B2B marketing in Norway usually lands between NOK 15,000 and 50,000 per month, depending on scope. Narrower retainers sit lower: ongoing AI visibility (AEO), for example, typically costs NOK 8,000 to 30,000 per month, numbers we have worked through in detail in what AI visibility costs in Norway. Larger one-off projects, such as a new website, sit outside the retainer and are priced separately, a calculation we have covered in what a B2B website costs in Norway.
The strength of an agency is speed and specialist expertise from day one. The weakness is that you rent the capacity instead of owning it. The day you stop paying, the engine stops. After three years on a retainer you are left with the results, but not with the system that created them.
We say this as an agency that sells retainers ourselves: for some tasks it is still the right purchase. But for the volume work your team could own, it is the expensive option over time.
Option 3: AI-driven system (one-off investment plus tools)
An AI-driven marketing system means AI and automation take the volume work (content, research, follow-up, reporting), while your people keep the judgement. The cost has three parts:
Setup and training: typically NOK 25,000 to 100,000 as a one-off job. With us, AI Marketing Engine costs a fixed NOK 49,000 for the first five companies (regular price from NOK 75,000), including mapping, setup in your own stack, training and a playbook.
The tools: from a few hundred to a couple of thousand kroner per user per month, depending on which models and automation tools you settle on.
Optional partner agreement: from around NOK 9,000 per month if you want someone to keep the engine up to date with new models and flows.
The key difference from an agency: your team owns the system afterwards. The knowledge, the flows and the dashboards stay with you.
The calculation side by side
Hire | Agency retainer | AI-driven system | |
|---|---|---|---|
Cost, year 1 | approx. NOK 1,024,000 | NOK 180,000 to 600,000 | NOK 49,000 to 100,000 + tools |
Cost, year 2 | approx. NOK 1,024,000 | same as year 1 | tools + optional partner from NOK 9,000/month |
Time to effect | 3 to 6 months | a few weeks | a few weeks |
Capacity | +1 person | rented capacity | the team you have, multiplied |
Who owns the system | the person (who can leave) | the agency | you |
And then the actual point: the value of time freed up. If you have two people in the marketing team who each spend 7 hours a week on automatable tasks, that is around 62 hours a month. At a capacity price of NOK 600 per hour (derived from the full employer cost), that is roughly NOK 444,000 a year in locked capacity. A one-off investment of NOK 49,000 is then paid back in well under two months. Do run the numbers with your own figures, the calculator is on our service page.
What AI does not fix
We like to speak plainly, so here is the honest part.
AI solves volume. It does not solve strategy, positioning or judgement. It does not know which customers you do not want, or when a story is too sensitive to publish. And AI without a quality system just gives you mediocre content faster, something we have written more about in how to use AI as a marketing manager.
That makes the comparison above slightly unfair to people: an AI system without a single human owning it is worthless. The calculation assumes you have at least one person who can hold the wheel. If you have no marketing resource at all, look at a Marketing Department solution first.
How to choose
Three simple decision rules:
Do you have 1 to 3 people in marketing and more work than time? Then an AI-driven system is the cheapest purchase per hour of capacity freed up. Start there before you post a job ad.
Do you have no dedicated marketing resource? Then you need hands and heads first, either a hire or an agency partner acting as your marketing department.
Is the bottleneck strategy and ownership rather than volume? Hire. And give that person an AI system from day one, so you avoid a second hire a year from now.
Frequently asked questions
What does AI-driven marketing cost in Norway?
Typically NOK 25,000 to 100,000 as a one-off investment for setting up and training an AI-driven marketing system, plus tool costs from a few hundred to a couple of thousand kroner per user per month. Ongoing support usually starts around NOK 9,000 per month.
Can AI replace a marketing agency?
Partly. AI can take over much of the production an agency has traditionally billed for: content, research, reporting and follow-up. Strategy, specialist expertise and judgement are harder to replace. Most companies end up with less agency help, not none.
Should we hire a marketer or use AI?
Work out what the problem actually is. If it is volume (too much work, too few hands), an AI system gives you capacity for less than a tenth of the cost of a hire. If ownership and strategy are what is missing, hire, and give that person the AI tools from day one.
What do the AI tools cost on their own?
The most common AI subscriptions cost from a couple of hundred to around a thousand kroner per user per month. Adding automation tools and integrations, many SMBs land at one to three thousand kroner a month in total.
How quickly is the investment paid back?
With two people each freeing up around 7 hours a week, the capacity freed up is worth roughly NOK 444,000 a year. A one-off investment of NOK 49,000 is then paid back in under two months. Use your own numbers, not ours, when you run the calculation.
Will it not all just be AI slop?
It will if you publish uncritically. A proper system has quality control, a tone of voice and a human who approves before publishing. AI takes the drafts and the volume, your people take the judgement.

General ranges are fine, but the decision should be made with your hours and your salary costs. Book an AI Marketing Engine check, 30 minutes, no obligation. You get a concrete picture of where time is leaking and what it is worth freed up. Worst case, you leave with a better calculation than you arrived with.
