How to see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics, and what the report doesn't show you

TL;DR: GA4 has introduced a new default channel called AI Assistant that shows traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. You don't need to set up anything yourself. The channel only measures clicks with a recognized referrer, and does not capture mentions without clicks, some in-app traffic, or Google AI Overviews.

Google Analytics now has its own channel for traffic from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. This makes it easier to see which visits actually come from AI. However, the report only shows clicks, not all the influence that occurs before a potential visit.

TL;DR: GA4 has received a new default channel called AI Assistant which shows traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. You don't need to set up anything yourself. The channel only measures clicks with a recognized referrer, and does not capture mentions without clicks, some in-app traffic, or Google AI Overviews.

What is the AI Assistant channel in GA4?

AI Assistant is a new default channel in Google Analytics 4 that aggregates visits from AI tools.

Previously, this type of traffic often ended up in Referral, or in some cases, Direct. Now it gets its own channel group, so you don't have to build your own regex filters to find it.

According to Google's own "What's New" documentation, the change was announced on May 13, 2026.

Do you need to set up anything?

No. The channel is rolled out automatically in GA4.

You don't need to enable a setting, create a filter, or perform an API setup. Once the rollout is in place in your property, the traffic will appear in the acquisition reports.

Worth knowing:

  • The rollout is happening gradually over several weeks

  • The data is not retroactive, so historical reports remain unchanged

  • Zero traffic today does not necessarily mean zero AI traffic

What does the report not capture?

The AI Assistant channel measures visits, not visibility. It only counts clicks with a recognized referrer, and there are three things that consistently fall outside:

  • Citations without clicks. If the AI uses your content in the response without the user clicking, no session occurs and nothing appears in GA4.

  • Mobile and in-app traffic. Many AI tools open links without a referrer header. Those visits still end up in Direct.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google keeps these under Organic Search, so traffic from Google's own AI interfaces is not in the new channel.

This makes the numbers useful, but incomplete. See them as a minimum figure, not a definitive answer.

AI traffic and AI visibility are not the same

Clicks from AI and mentions in AI responses are two different things.

GA4 answers the question: How many clicked through to here from an AI tool? That is useful. But for B2B, there is an equally important question: Are we mentioned and recommended when someone asks the AI about our category?

Much of the real impact happens directly in the response, without a single click. In those cases, you have gained influence that GA4 does not see. Therefore, you should read the new channel as half the picture: the clicks it captures, plus the mentions and citations it does not see.
